In order to market lighting with a CE mark in the European Union, classification according to DIN EN 62471 "Photobiological Safety of Lamps and Lamp Systems" is required in addition to RoHS and EMC measurements. Through this classification, it is possible to assign lighting to so-called risk groups (RG). Each risk group has threshold values for the duration of eye irradiation with corresponding intensity and wavelength.

Lighting in the visible wavelength range is usually assigned to risk groups RG0 to a maximum of RG2, since the natural protective reaction of the eye (turning away, closing) protects against damage. For lighting in the invisible wavelength range, especially UV lighting, this natural protective reaction does not apply. The result is that powerful UV lighting is assigned to risk group RG3. Corresponding labeling is affixed to each of our lighting products.
There are several ways to safely use lighting products that are assigned to higher risk groups. One simple way is to use protective eyewear. The other two options require an assessment of the entire system by a laser safety officer. They either require a housing for the entire system or a reduction of exposure time through the use of a controller (LIC).
